Information about Xigris

You may have questions about Xigris as a treatment option for your loved one with severe sepsis. Here, you can find answers to these questions:

What is Xigris?

Xigris* (pronounced "zy-gris") is the only FDA-approved treatment proven to lower the risk of death from severe sepsis in adult patients at a high risk of death. Doctors use antibiotics to treat the infection that triggers severe sepsis, but Xigris is the only medication that actually treats severe sepsis itself. When Xigris was tested in a large clinical trial of patients with severe sepsis, more of the patients who received Xigris survived.*

When and how do doctors give a patient Xigris?

Doctors carefully evaluate a patient before deciding to give Xigris. When a doctor determines that a patient with severe sepsis is at a high risk of dying, he or she may decide to use Xigris to help the patient survive. Xigris is given through an IV tube continuously for four days.

How do we know Xigris works?

One-third to one-half of people who get severe sepsis die from it, even with standard supportive care in a hospital. Clinical trials found that more people survived if they were given Xigris in addition to standard supportive care. Since FDA approval in 2001, Xigris has been given to thousands of patients to help them fight severe sepsis. And while some patients who receive Xigris may still die, Xigris can help doctors save the lives of many patients.

What should I know about the safety of Xigris?

Xigris is not for everyone. Xigris acts as a "blood thinner," so it increases the chance of bleeding, especially in patients who have conditions that may make them more likely to bleed. These include certain medical conditions, medications, and procedures related to the patient's history or care. Some of these patients should not receive Xigris. Doctors will evaluate each patient carefully and make a decision based on specific knowledge of the patient and the potential benefits and risks of Xigris treatment. No other side effects are associated with Xigris.

*Xigris is indicated for the reduction of mortality in adult patients with severe sepsis (sepsis associated with acute organ dysfunction) who have a high risk of death (eg, as determined by APACHE II).

Xigris is not indicated in adult patients with severe sepsis and lower risk of death. Xigris is not indicated in pediatric patients with severe sepsis.
