
Sepsis Continuum
The diagram below may help you identify the progression of severe sepsis. It includes symptoms and supportive care methods associated with each step of the progression.

The body's response to infection is usually targeted at the source of infection. It becomes severe sepsis when this response spins out of control, spreading throughout the body. When one or more organs become damaged, it advances. Left untreated, multiple organs begin to fail, increasing the risk of death.
